Here is a copy of the actual parole paper for Lt. Joseph G. Lewis. I find this real fascinating, not only for the language of the paper, but also because it has Joseph's handwriting and signature.

The Mission of this Site
Welcome all! This website's aim is initially designed to do several things. First and foremost, it is to honor my direct ancestors who fought in the 8th Missouri Cavalry, Co. B, Confederates States of America.
Here is a great quote by General John B. Gordon, CSA that really sums up my general view on those who fought in the War Between the States -
"For the future glory of this Republic, it is absolutely immaterial whether on this battlefield or that the Blue or the Gray won a great victory, for, thanks be to God, every victory won in that War by either side was a monument to American valor."

Champion Hill, 15 May 1865
At the end of a brutal battle at the base of Champion Hill, about 15 miles east of Vicksburg, MS, with no apparent change in military gain, an Illinois soldier noted while roaming the field, "There they lay, the blue and the gray intermingled; the same rich, young American blood flowing out in little rivulets of crimson; each thinking he was right."
